Hal Jandorf spoke to us about astronomy and the upcoming solar eclipse in May.

Hal Jandorf gave a presentation on astronomy and the solar eclipse that is coming in May 2012.  Mr. Jandorf has been an astronomy professor at Moorpark College for twenty-eight years.  He is also currently the President of the Ventura County Astronomical Society.

There are three types of solar eclipses:  a total eclipse, an annular eclipse, and a partial eclipse.  A total eclipse is extremely rare and is considered a big event.  An annular eclipse appears when it looks like there is a ring of fire around the moon.  In all cases, an eclipse is when the moon passes between the earth and the sun.The solar eclipse due to occur on May 20, 2012, will appear as a partial eclipse in Ventura.  To see it as a true annular eclipse you need to view it from approximately 100 miles North of Sacramento.Anytime you view an eclipse, you must consider the safety of your eyes.  Mr. Jandorf recommends “geek glasses” which look somewhat similar to 3D glasses or a single piece of film that you hold in front of your eyes.  They cost about $1 each.  Supplies will run out by the time of the eclipse, so buy them now.  Mr. Jandorf provides presentations to schools and other groups, and individuals.  You can even have him present at your cocktail party.  You can read more about this at the website, www.astronomerhal.com.Thank you Mr. Jandorf.  Your presentation was out of this world!
