District Governor Frank made his official visit to our club with his wife Scottie.

Our Club was honored to have District Governor Frank Ortiz and his wife Scottie join us at our meeting.  DG Ortiz has been a member of the Santa Maria Breakfast Club since 1998.  He held a variety of leadership positions within his Club including serving as President for the 2003-2004 year.  DG Ortiz also held positions at the District level including Group Representative and Assistant Governor.  DG Ortiz has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in Emergency Services Administration.  DG Ortiz is retired from the fire department where he served as Fire Chief for many years.

DG Ortiz spoke highly of our Club and the projects we are involved in.  He felt that our project with the YMCA and our annual scholarships are great examples of the services we provide to the local community.

DG Ortiz recognized that Rotary is truly an international organization that is doing great things globally.  DG Ortiz felt that our Club is part of that great international work as demonstrated through our efforts in Nicaragua.

Scottie Ortiz discussed her experience as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA”).  CASA is an organization that matches adults with children who are dealing with difficult issues at home.  Scottie read a story that one child wrote which explained that he felt his advocate is a true hero because she is always there for him.

DG Ortiz recognized several individuals.  He recognized John Masterson, Pete Ghallager, and Andy Corliss for their efforts in starting this Club so many years ago.  DG Ortiz also recognized Tom Swan and Dick Norman for their choice to introduce Rotary to Nikki Sloan and Deborah Perkins who are now slated to be future leaders of the Club.

DG Ortiz spoke about the wonderful experience that he had with the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.  He hosted a girl from Argentina and she became like a member of his family.  Several years later, he traveled to Argentina for her wedding.

DG Ortiz urges everyone to get involved now and not wait for a better time.  He reminded everyone that the District Conference will be September 28-30 on the Queen Mary, and hopes to see all of us there.

Thank you DG Ortiz and Scottie for your inspiring words.
