History of the Push ‘N’ Pullem Parade
by Midge Stork

July 4, 2011 marks the 36th anniversary for Ventura’s Push ‘N’ Pullem Parade. The parade is a signature event for the citizens of our community that continues to grow each year. In many cases, three generations of families will march on July 4th. Most were youngsters when they marched with their parents pushing their strollers or pulling their wagons in 1976. Now they and their parents can experience the parade with their own children and grandchildren.

The parade began as part of Ventura’s Bicentennial Celebration. the Bicentennial office, staffed by Faye Campbell and Judy Treim provided period costume patterns and sewing clinics about town so participants could fashion 1776 costumes.

The original committee was made up of Barbara Mugenburg, Joanne Kaplan, Midge Stork, Lynne Dyer, Cynthia Hashbarger and Allison Werwerka. Then a group of friends lead by Carolyn Hoffman took over for a few years followed by the Ventura Jaycee Women. During these years, members of the Ventura-East Rotary Club were always parade monitors. The Rotarians took over full responsibility for the parade in 1980. They organize, monitor and financially sponsor the event for the City of Ventura. Some members have manned the same intersection for 35 years.

Marchers decorate bicycles and wagons in red, white and blue or just dress in patriotic colors and walk along. No motorized vehicles or animals are allowed in the parade.

Parade participants meet at 9:00 am; Sunday, July 4th at Cemetery Park located on Main Street between Hemlock and Aliso Streets. The easiest way to enter is by Poli Street, a block above Main Street. Rotarians will signup and lineup participants from 9:00 am until starting time at 10:30 am sharp! Marchers receive free commemorative 36th anniversary Push ‘N’ Pullem buttons.

The 36th Fourth of July Street Fair follows the Push ‘N’ Pullem parade on Main Street between Chestnut and Ventura Avenue. For more information on 4th of July activities, call the City of Ventura Office of Special Events: (805) 654-7830.
