President's Message

Dave Cox, President of The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo penned the following words.

"Two major national events fall this week:  Election Day on Tuesday, and Veterans Day on Friday.  Despite the rancor and fatigue of the election, I can't help but note how interconnected voting and Veterans Day are to each other and feel gratitude for both.

Veterans Day is observed every year on Nov. 11.  While Memorial Day honors those who died in military service, Veterans Day celebrates both the living and the dead.  It was once known as Armistice Day and was rooted in one of the most destructive conflicts in history, World War I.  Commonly called the "Great War," more than 30 nations were involved in this tragic event that continued for four devastating years, obliterating European landscapes, and ushering in the use of poison gas.

After a long stalemate, the United States entered the war, and the Allied forces launched an offensive that would prove decisive. Finally, on November 11 at 11:00 a.m. Paris time, an armistice came into effect.

Armistice Day was observed annually until 1954 when President Eisenhower signed legislation formally creating Veterans Day in acknowledgment of all military service.  Parades, special ceremonies, and graveside events have marked this day of recognition over the years.

There are thousands of veterans living on the Central Coast who we want to honor and thank. Precious few remain from WWII.  Our Korea and Vietnam veterans are of advancing years, and there are many younger veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq and other conflicts.  Local veterans have served our country here at home and at posts around the world, many of them from multi-generation military service families. I know you join me in extending our deep gratitude for their service.

I want to especially acknowledge the veterans within our own club whose commitment to making the world a better place continues today with their service to Rotary. Thank you for all you have given, and all you do for us."

Please join us this Thursday as we celebrate our veterans and have the privilege of hearing from a veteran as our program. It is a great opportunity to bring a guest.

Thank you
Tim
