This week we will have representatives from the Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast, with whom we are partnering for the Beer, Wine, and Food Festival on June 8th. Keep looking for sponsors to participate in that event. And tell your friends to save the date. Let’s learn about the objectives of the Girl Scouts in the 21st Century. There will be cookies! The Club is purchasing 100 boxes as part of the “Cookie Connection” drive; lucky recipients of the cookies are to be determined, but in the meantime, for a donation you may take some home for your Easter baskets, if that’s something you do, or hide them from your spouse to enjoy when they aren’t looking (which is something I do), or maybe share after they wash your car…..
We had about 30 members and guests join in the Third Thursday Social at Yolanda’s last week. Good food and good conversation with good friends. Ashley Pope stopped by to update us on the progress of the Interact Club. And Abbi Hanoch let us know that she has landed her dream job of being a financial analyst for the government! Unfortunately, it means that she will be moving to Albuquerque. She has been a dedicated member of the Club’s Poinsettia campaigns, managing the database for the past two years. We wish her well, but will miss her as a Club member and will be needing a new volunteer to handle the Poinsettia spreadsheet.
A huge thank you to Bruce McGee for volunteering as a group counselor at YES! -Youth Empowerment Summit - last Saturday. This is a one day version of RYLA, where students experience Team Building, Diversity, Ethics, and Public Speaking sessions to build leadership, communication and other skills to benefit them in school, career, life in general. They gain perspective and insight while making new friends and spending the day cheering for their color group. The District is hoping to establish a YES! in each county. Though RYLA is the crown jewel as a multi-day immersive experience, having YES! will enable Rotary to benefit more students; perhaps motivating them to apply for RYLA and join an Interact Club.
Next week we will be meeting on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3rd, no fooling! Set a reminder on your watch or phone!! We will be in the Ventura room joining other Group 7 Clubs for lunch and social time followed by a Virtual ceremony awarding The Rotary Clubs of California the Bernard Osher Philanthropist of the Year. It’s a big honor recognizing the impact Rotary has on the California Community Colleges. Also, this is a great opportunity to gather with our nearby clubs and hear about upcoming events and projects. Lunch will be at noon as usual. The award ceremony will be in the 1-1:30 timeframe.
Calendar
April 3rd – *** special multi-club event replacing our April 4th meeting!
April 11 – Student of the Quarter
April 18 – Social TBA
April 25 – Scholarship Awards
In recognition that this is an election year, I remind you that Rotary is a neutral zone. Thank you for respecting and enjoying the a-political aspect of our organization.
I will see you on WEDNESDAY next week, NOT Thursday.
