Rotary emphasizes integrity and high ethical standards ... As part of Rotary's guiding principles and the Avenues of ServiceVocational Service calls on Rotarians to empower others by using their unique skills and expertise to address community needs and help others discover new professional opportunities and interests.

At the Rotary Club of Ventura-East, our Vocational Service Committee conducts the following activities each year:

  1. Ron Hertel Four Way Essay Contest: Our club named the Four Way Essay Contest after Ron Hertel, one of our club charter members. We receive essays from students at Balboa Middle School and Buena High School. We have the top three essay winners read their essay at the club and have an award ceremony with the parents and teachers.
  2. Student of Quarter: The club gives the Student of the Quarter award to Buena High School students. The students are selected by the teachers. The students, parents and teacher attend our lunch for the presentation. We typically have presentations in November, February and May of each year with 1-3 students at each award.
  3. Mock Interviews: The club participates with mock interviews at Buena High School each year.
  4. Job Shadow: The club participates with a job shadow program at Buena High School each year. The students visit varies businesses/locations and then speak about the event at our club lunch the same day.
  5. Dr. Robert Pazen Nursing Scholarship: The club offers two scholarships of $1,000 each to nursing students in the Ventura College Nursing Program. Our first recipient in 2020 was Ericka Mendez who is now a registered nurse working at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) in Ventura.
  6. Rotary Employee of the Quarter: We ask club members to recognize exceptional employees during the year. The employee is presented the award at our club meeting.
  7. Administrative Assistant/Secretary’s Day: (April): We started this in 2019. We have a speaker on a subject interesting to employees (Wine Tasting, etc.) and invite administrative assistants and secretaries to the club lunch.
  8. Veterans Appreciation Day:  The club invites a speaker on Veterans issues. We recognize all club Veterans at the meeting.
  9. Holiday Gifts with Ventura Co. Military Collaborative (“VCMC”): The club adopts 3 or 4 military families and buys holiday gifts for the families.  VCMC provides us the families and gift preferences. We raise the money from club members and we shop for and buy the gifts. In 2020, during Covid, VCMC did not hold the event so we gave holiday gifts to the Ventura Co. Fire Dept. “Spark of Love” project.
If you are interested in helping with any of these projects, please reach out to Joe Strohman
